First Class
Welcome to our First Class Page
In First Class children have to get used to a longer day than before: from 8.50a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The children also use a homework journal for the first time in 1st class.
English: We have been working hard in English this year. We have become excellent readers and each week we are getting better and better. After Christmas on Wednesdays, Reading Buddies from St. Paul’s Community College came over to listen to our reading and we really enjoyed it. We also have been learning about different types of writing. So far this year we have learned about procedural, recount and narrative writing. We are getting very good at these. We are working hard to make our writing exciting by including amazing adjectives and making sure to remember our capital letters and full stops.
Maths: Maths has been a lot of fun this year and we are getting strong at it. We do fun maths warm up games every day and work out our brains with our mental maths. We have been learning about tens and units and we are really good at these now. We have also learned about time, fractions, length, data, subtraction, 2-D shapes and 3-D shapes.
Gaeilge: We speak Irish every day. We also learned some cool Irish songs and poems. We love to play Irish games like Guess Who? and bingo. Some of the topics we cover are myself, my home, at school, special occasions, food, shopping, television, pastimes, clothes and weather.
Art: As part of our art classes we have been learning about some famous artists. We learned about Kadinsky who is a famous Russian artist. He is famous for his abstract art and we had a go at re-creating his famous painting ‘Squares with Concentric Circles’. We had a lot of fun. We also learned about George Seurat who is a famous pointillism artist. He used hundreds of tiny dots to make a picture. From a distance the colours come together to form shapes and patterns. We had a go and we painted rainbows. It was so much fun to make. Another interesting art project was about spring. We made a spring display for our classroom using all of the objects that we had created; lambs using cotton wool, daffodils using toilet rolls, tulips using our handprints and chicks using feathers. Art class was really fun that day.
Other: We have been a really lucky class, each week we get to go to hurling, singing and drama. We have two hurling coaches that come in every Thursday. We have started a hurling league in our class. Each boy is improving their hurling skills. Ms. Power comes in to teach us songs every Wednesday. We have learned some fantastic songs. Our favourite song so far has been Cowboy Joe. Also on Wednesday Mr. Nick Kavanagh comes in to do drama with us. We have lots of fun every week.

Thank you to the Parents' Association
"A big thank you to our Parents' Association" from all the boys and staff for their support to us over the last year. We have been able to get a number of projects off the ground as a result of their contribution. With the proceeds of their fundraising projects, we now have a brand new stage; guitars, keyboards and recorders for our music lessons. They also funded the design of this website which was designed by a past pupil of ours, William Hayes.
